How does Instagram fight counterfeiting?

The fight against counterfeits on Instagram and Facebook is reaching a new level. Meta is introducing new brand protection tools, including enhanced processes for matching product images. Meta (Instagram and Facebook) is implementing new measures to help brands protect their intellectual property. This includes an updated “Brand Rights Manager” tool, which detects violations, and a new Intellectual Property Reporting Center, simplifying the tracking of infringement reports.

First and foremost is the Brand Rights Manager, Meta is enhancing its brand rights tracking tool with new AI-based features, providing broader protection for your products. As Meta explains, “The new version Brand Rights Manager utilizes our latest AI and machine learning capabilities to search for higher quality matches based on previous usage by brands of this tool.” The system allows you to upload reference images of your products, which Meta can then use to detect duplicates, now providing more optimized detection elements, including saved search results and broader search parameters, simplifying the process. Additionally, Meta is expanding the limit of reference images from 50 to 200, allowing for a wider range of options for cross-verification.

Meta is also expanding its Rights Manager platform to provide more extensive blocking of infringing content and tagging of image owners, giving rights holders greater control over their content. The new Intellectual Property Reporting Center streamlines the reporting process by saving relevant account information and report history in one place. Reporters need to log into their Facebook, Instagram, or Business Manager account to access the IP Reporting Center. Multiple users logged into the Business Manager under one account can view the report history for the entire business.

Finally, Meta is adding a new section called “Business Protection” on its Meta for Business website, featuring notes and guides to help enterprises develop brand protection strategies. This is a significant extension of Meta’s IP monitoring tools, providing protection for brands targeted by dubious resellers on Facebook and Instagram selling counterfeit products. Counterfeits undermine brand reputation, and Facebook, through feed ads and Marketplace promotions, is a known target for many of these individuals.
